Recreating a summer favorite: DIY Woven Clutch

June 28, 2017 DIY

Today on the blog – sharing one of my favorite DIYs to date and one of my favorite summer trends. Woven handbags!

For this DIY I went looking first for some color inspiration. First, I thought I’d do something with lots of fringe and maybe some pom poms. But then…. I saw how nice and clean and simple the weave looks with just white or black. I also had some extra pom pom ribbon laying around that I could use.

Some of my inspiration!

My Materials

Woven clutch – mine was from Francesca’s (circa 2012)

Pom pom ribbon – Michael’s

Hot Glue Gun

White acrylic paint

Step 1 – Paint the old trim

My clutch had this bright neon yellow/green trim which at the time of purchase was a fun investment. It did turn out to be an investment for the purpose of this post, but it definitely sat in my closet for a few years before I got to re-invent it.

*Just as a tip, you can use normal craft acrylic paint on pleather (which is what my purse is made of). I wouldn’t suggest using it on real leather. They make special paint for that.

I chose to cover the neon in white paint – really going for a beachy theme with it. My original thought was to add in some black stripes kind of like the inspiration photo above, but once I got a couple coats of paint on with white, I really fell in love and abandoned the black all-together!

Step 2 – Measure out your ribbon

After you add multiple coats of paint to cover the previous color underneath – it’s time to decide where you would like to add your pom pom ribbon.

I went for a little on the top and on the edges of the clutch!

Measure out and cut the pieces to the length of where you will be attaching them.

Step 3 – Hot glue the ribbon down

Once you decide where you want your ribbon to go – add a dab of hot glue along the edge and push down firmly.

Voila!

And there you have it –  My new summer clutch! Thinking it will go perfectly with a flowy summer dress or paired with a bathing suit, coverup and straw hat. Promise to share on Instagram the next time I wear it. 🙂
