Hi friends and followers! So, today on the blog I wanted to share another one of my home decor projects! Today’s project, a hand lettered bedroom quote for above our bed!
I decided that our bedroom really needed something above the bed, especially since our bed is on a box spring and not in a frame. We don’t have a headboard, and therefore I thought it would be a great idea to hang one or two things right above the bed.
I went back and forth on what I wanted to hang. First, I saw a few photos on pinterest of people that framed different pressed flowers and anatomical photos of different plants. Figured it would be something that both Jonathan and I could agree on. BUT, once I did the sign for Jonathan’s urban farm, Off The Bluff (check out that post), I was obsessed with the way the stained wood looked with white wording on it.
So it was decided, that’s what we would hang.
Prepare your wood
I went ahead and had Jonathan cut about a 18 x 22 size piece of scrap wood from our stockpile and used “Early American” stain from Minwax to get a rich brown color.
Now, to figure out a quote that’s not too girly and not lame. Which is a lot harder than you think it is. LOL
After three days of pinterest browsing, and going back and forth between if we wanted to use an inspiration quote, a song lyric or a quote about dreaming, we decided on this quote:
“Here sleeps a girl with a head full of magical dreams, a heart full of wonder and hands that will shape the world”
Okay, so we had to edit the quote a little bit. I couldn’t exactly take over the bed, although Jonathan would say I’m definitely a hog. Once we did a little re-configuring, the quote came out to…
“Here sleeps two, with heads full of magical dreams, hearts full of wonder and hands that will shape the world”
(I would say that’s a pretty good compromise)
Sketch it out
After sketching out the layout on a piece of scrap paper, I used a piece of chalk to draw it out and make sure it fit on my piece of wood. (that way, if you mess up, you can always wipe it off! Nifty trick I picked up from one of the many lettering ladies I follow on instagram)
Once I finished sketching it out, I used a paint brush, a steady hand and two coats of white acrylic paint to finish my quote!
