When you live in a small home, you need as much storage as possible. So when we started renovations to the living room, a built in bookshelf and bottom cabinets was always in the plan. Jonathan has a rather large collection of books, so once the shelves were done and the books perched on their shelves, I thought it would be a great project to include customized hand-lettered bookends to mark the different genres.
The Project
Using reclaimed wood (channeling that inner Joanna Gaines), a fun pop of color and a bit of hand lettering, we brought extra life and organization to our “library”.
Cut the wood into 6″ blocks (perfect size to sit among the books).
Alternative:
If you don’t have reclaimed wood, you can always head over to your local home improvement store where they can cut one large two-by-four to your desired sizes.
Choose a color of paint that will pop on the shelf. I chose a vibrant wine color, in an acrylic paint. No need to get fancy with your paint since these will be indoors.
Paint both of the bindings of your block.
Next, make sure you have all of your categories written down and practice writing them so you know if they will fit on your blocks.
Our categories included: Fiction & Leisure, DIY & Home, Gardening and a few others – In all, we created six bookends.
Now it’s time to take pen to wood. Using the hand-dandy sharpie paint pen (in white), transfer your genres onto each of your blocks.

The Final Product
Voila!! Now, you’re ready to place on your shelves.
Ahhhhhh…. the organization is so satisfying! This project was extremely easy gave me yet another excuse to hand-letter!
Enjoy. 🙂
